Create authentic Japanese names with Kanji, Romaji pronunciation, and meanings for your creative projects

A Japanese name is more than its pronunciation. The same spoken name can be written with different kanji, and the characters carry the meaning — which is why a romanised name on its own is only half an answer. This generator creates names the way they would appear in Japan: a family name and a given name, shown in kanji with the romaji pronunciation, and the meaning where it is available. You can generate male, female or unisex names, ask for a first name only or a full name, and choose between common, simple kanji, traditional rarer characters, or a mix — then copy a name to the clipboard or export a list as CSV or JSON if you are building a whole cast.
For a story’s heroine, the generator offers Tanaka Haruka — 田中 遥, pronounced tah-nah-kah hah-roo-kah. The family name Tanaka (田中, “rice field”) comes first, as in Japanese usage, and the given name Haruka is written with the kanji 遥, “distant” or “far-off” — a meaning a writer can quietly build into the character. For a game character, Takahashi Ren — 高橋 蓮 — pairs the common family name Takahashi (“tall bridge”) with Ren, written 蓮, “lotus”. Neither name was assembled from random syllables: the names are drawn from real Japanese name lists, grouped by gender, popularity and kanji readability, with modern and traditional styles available.
Honest note, worth keeping on the page: combinations and meanings are randomly paired for creative use, so treat a generated name as an authentic starting point rather than a guaranteed native-approved combination. Writers naming novel and manga characters, gamers, anime fans and language learners practising reading names all use it. Free, in your browser, with no sign-up.
