How many tiles and boxes you need - grout gaps counted, and the right waste allowance for your pattern, not a flat guess.
Printed on the box. Tiles per box varies - the calculator works yours out from the coverage.
Tile count is area divided by the area one tile covers - but the tile on the floor is bigger than the tile in the box, because every tile carries its share of the grout joint. This calculator prices in the gap: a 12 x 12 tile with a 1/8-inch joint really covers 12.125 x 12.125 inches of floor, so an 80 sq ft floor takes about 79 tiles before waste, not the flat 80 that area-alone maths suggests.
Waste depends on the pattern. A straight layout wastes about 10% on cuts. Diagonal layouts cut every edge tile at 45 degrees - plan 15%. Herringbone and chevron are the hungriest at around 20%, because of the sheer number of angled cuts. Pick your pattern above and the right allowance is included automatically.
Buy whole boxes and keep the spares. Tiles are made in batches (lots), and the same tile bought months later can differ slightly in shade - the leftover tiles from your boxes are the only guaranteed match for a future repair. If your room is an odd shape, split it into rectangles, run each one, and add the tile counts together.
10% for a straight layout, 15% for diagonal, and 20% for herringbone or chevron - the pattern decides it, not a flat rule. This calculator applies the right figure when you pick your pattern.
Slightly, yes. Each tile covers its own size plus one grout joint in each direction, so wider joints mean marginally fewer tiles. The bigger factor is waste from cuts.
It varies by tile - boxes are sold by coverage, commonly around 10-15 sq ft per box for floor tiles. Enter the coverage printed on your box and the calculator works out boxes and spares.
Yes. Tiles are produced in batches and shades drift between them, so your spares are the only perfect match for a cracked tile years later.
