What “chronological age” means

Chronological age is simply the exact amount of time that has passed since a person was born, counted in years, months and days. It sounds like the same question as “how old are you”, but the word “chronological” is the one used where the figure has to be exact and defensible: it is the standard age format for school enrolment, healthcare records, exam eligibility and legal and HR documents. Those contexts also share a wrinkle this calculator is built for — the age often has to be stated at a particular date, not today: a child's age on the first day of term, an applicant's age on a closing date, a patient's age on the day of an appointment. Enter a reference date (the “Current Date” field) and the age is calculated at that date instead of today.

How to use it

  1. Enter the date of birth.
  2. Leave the Current Date field blank to use today, or enter the reference date the form or deadline specifies.
  3. Read the chronological age in years, months and days, with the running total in hours, minutes and seconds.
  4. Check the breakdowns — total days, weeks and months lived, decimal years, the day of the week of the birth, and the countdown to the next birthday — and use Copy Results to lift the figures straight into your notes.

Worked examples

A child born on 14 May 2021 starts school in September 2026, and the enrolment form asks for age on 1 September 2026. Setting that as the reference date gives 5 years, 3 months and 18 days — the exact figure the school means, which a “she's five” answer cannot give. An HR officer checking a retirement-eligibility date for an employee born on 3 November 1990 reads, as of 29 October 2026, 35 years, 11 months and 26 days, alongside totals of more than 13,000 days lived — the totals are often what medical and insurance forms ask for. The arithmetic is leap-year aware throughout, so February birthdays and long spans stay exact.

Parents use it for school and exam cut-offs, patients and clinics for medical forms, and HR teams for documentation. Your birth date is never sent or stored — the calculation happens in your browser. Free, with no sign-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chronological age?

The exact time passed since birth, usually expressed in years, months and days. It is the standard age format used by schools, healthcare, and legal and HR documents — which is why forms ask for it by that name.

How do I calculate age at a date other than today?

Enter the date of birth, then put the date you need in the Current Date (reference date) field — a school cut-off, an application deadline, an appointment day. The age is worked out at that date.

What breakdowns does it show?

Years, months and days, plus hours, minutes and seconds; total days, weeks and months lived; age in decimal years, months and weeks; the day of the week of the birth; and a countdown to the next birthday.

Is my date of birth kept or shared?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
